Cover of The Chatelaine of La Trinite by Henry Blake Fuller (The Century Co., New York: 1892). The cover design is by Alice Cordelia Morse, a leading book-cover designer of the late 19th century. She previously worked for Louis Comfort Tiffany as a painter and designer of leaded glass windows. An example of this cover was exhibited in the Woman’s Building at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The artist based the design on a Tyrolean belt, well suited to the Alpine travel that forms the basis for the novel.
Fuller is widely regarded as the first novelist from Chicago to gain a national reputation. Learn more about Fuller by visiting the Object of the Month for June 2023 under Explore the Collections, which discusses another of his novels in the Glessner library, With the Procession (1895).
