Final hand-painted tile in the “Lancelot and Elaine” series, attributed to English artist Henry George Alexander Holiday (1839-1927). The story is taken from Idylls of the King by Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892). The tiles were purchased by the Glessners in 1877 for the library mantelpiece in their home on Washington Street. When they moved to Prairie Avenue in 1887, the set of five tiles was installed on the plate rail in the main hall, where they remain today.
