Portrait of George Washington, painted in 1793 by Edward Savage (1761-1817).
The portrait appears as the frontispiece in the book, George Washington in Love and Otherwise, by Eugene E. Prussing. The book was published in Chicago in 1925 in a deluxe edition, consisting of 1,100 copies, numbered and autographed. John Glessner acquired copy number 140 and wrote to the author expressing his admiration for the volume. A letter from the author, dated December 9, 1925, acknowledging Glessner’s letter, is pasted inside the front cover.
The original painting, oil on mahogany panel, was donated to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1921 by Catherine Colvin. It is on display in the Art of the Americas Gallery 167.
