Hero, a Skye Terrier, was acquired by the Glessners in July 1885 and quickly became a beloved member of the family. Frances Glessner noted in her journal, soon after his arrival, that “the dog needs a whole book to himself - he is so intelligent.” He became a favorite of Violette Scharff, Fanny’s paid companion, and accompanied her on a trip to Switzerland to visit her family in April 1892. His health began to deteriorate, and he was put down on July 9, 1892.
