Land Acknowledgement

Glessner House stands on the traditional homelands of the Council of the Three Fires, comprising the Anishinaabe Tribes of the Odawak (Odawa), Anishinaabeg (Ojibwe), and Bodéwadmik (Potawatomi) nations. Many other tribes have also called the Chicago region home. All these peoples cared for the land where they gathered, traded, and maintained kinship ties, prior to their forced removal by non-Native settlers in the first half of the 19th century.

The Prairie Avenue Historic District, in which the House is located, is situated on the site of the 1812 Battle of Fort Dearborn – an event mischaracterized throughout history with disregard for the Indigenous peoples and their attempts to preserve the homelands of generations of their ancestors.

The House acknowledges the long and complex history of the land on which it stands and commits to celebrating the Indigenous communities past and present in its programs, tours, and interpretation.
